10 games in: Six key areas where Aaron Ramsey is worse off than last season

Aaron Ramsey

We have taken a look at how Aaron Ramsey of 2013 compares to Aaron Ramsey of 2014 and see whether the Arsenal midfielder is really out of form.

Aaron Ramsey has struggled to live up to the pace he set last season and in comparison his statistics are down, bar two key aspects.

The Welsh wizard, who scored Arsenal's FA Cup winning goal, had been considered a revelation last season and it looked as if Arsene Wenger had worked his magic once again, finding a world-standard midfielder for just £4.8million.

However, going by his 10 appearances this season, he is struggling to hit the heights he was able to set last season.

We take a look at eight key areas of Ramsey's game and see where he needs to improve, and what he needs to do in order to reach the performance levels he gave last season.

Unsurprisingly, this season has seen Ramsey lose out in six key areas - goals, assists, shots on target, accurate passes, battles won and touches.

Last season, Ramsey was an all-action, combative midfielder that was just as effective defending his own area than he was attacking the oppositions, but this season the supporters haven't seen the same vigour from the Welsh international and that is clearly shown in the battles won statistics of both this and last season.

It's also worth mentioning that this season he hasn't completed a 90 minute football game in the league since the end of September, clearly Wenger showing doubt on the 23-year-old's impact on games and on his legs to last the full match.A trait that could never have been associated with Ramsey last season as he proved a force in the centre of the park.

Ramsey has attempted more key passes this season than he tried at the same point last season, but is clearly struggling for range as he has, so far, provided less assists for the team. He has also lost possession on fewer occasions, but other than that it clearly shows Ramsey is lacking in form.

Based on the statistics, you would have to argue that Ramsey needs to add that combative spirit back into his game and increase his fitness to the same level as last season in order to have a similar impact. if he can go back to doing the basics right, the goals and assists will come. He will improve and hopefully help Arsenal guarantee Champions League football for next season.
