Roberto Martinez: Tyias Browning or Luke Garbutt will start against West Ham if Leighton Baines is not fit

Roberto Martinez has given a hint at his team selection for Everton's match against West Ham United this weekend.

Roberto Martinez suggests that Tyias Browning or Luke Garbutt could be given a chance to play if Leighton Baines does not overcome his injury in time for Everton's match against West Ham United this weekend.

Baines picked up a hamstring injury in training which has kept him out for the entirety of the international break so far and there are now doubts over whether he will be available for the match on Saturday.

Baines is an important player for Everton and is considered as one of the finest full-backs in the Premier League, meaning covering for him will not be an easy task for whoever is selected.

There was a feeling that Bryan Oviedo was the most likely candidate given his past experience, but he is still not fully-fit and Martinez has revealed he will favour a youngster over the Costa Rican.

“It will be wrong for us to rush Bryan just because Leighton has got an injury,” Martinez said to Everton's official site. “Tyias Browning or Luke Garbutt, there could be an opportunity for a youngster who has been working hard in that department.

“As is stands we’ll try to give as much time to Leighton to get fully recovered and see if he can be fit for the West Ham game. If not, I wouldn’t be worried about giving the opportunity to one of our youngsters because they have been working really well and they would deserve it.”

Browning has actually had a few fleeting appearances in the first-team this season, but they have generally been as a substitute.

During his time on the pitch his pace and power have been impressive, but he will have to raise these performance levels even further if he is to cover for Baines.

The only draw-back to using Browning in the first-team, would be that he isn't not a natural left-back, favouring playing on the other side of the pitch, and that may make Garbutt the favourite to get the nod.

Although he has less first-team experience, there are still high hopes for the 21-year-old, who has caps for England at every age-group up to England under-21 level.

Garbutt made his first appearance for the club last season and he will be looking to impress if he is given the opportunity to start by Martinez against West Ham.

It will be a tough test for either of the youngsters if Baines does not make it as the Hammers have been in fine form this season, but they should step into a side full of confidence.

Everton are unbeaten in their last six fixtures across all competitions and they will be hoping to extend this record as they look to climb the table after the international break.
