AC Milan join race for Newcastle-linked Aleksandar Mitrovic, will cost £12m

Newcastle were linked with a move for Aleksandar Mitrovic last week - but now AC Milan want him too.

Newcastle United may have made a dreadful start to the season, but manager Alan Pardew has stood strong in the face of hostile criticism to lead the Magpies towards the top four.

Five consecutive wins in all competitions have seen Newcastle defeat Leicester, Tottenham, Manchester City, Liverpool and West Bromwich Albion in an amazing run of form.

Key to that upturn in results is Spanish striker Ayoze Perez, who scored against Tottenham, Liverpool and West Brom to underline his potential.

The 21-year-old joined the Magpies from Tenerife this summer, and with his excellent movement, Newcastle are reportedly looking to add a target man to play alongside him.

Anderlecht star Aleksandar Mitrovic scored the dramatic equaliser against Arsenal in the Champions League earlier this month, and is allegedly being eyed up by the Magpies.

Mitrovic, 20, is the prototypical target man, displaying great strength and aerial ability, and that has helped him on his way to scoring 27 goals in just 59 games for Anderlecht.

Those goalscoring exploits haven't gone unnoticed, and Liverpool were believed to have had a £10m bid rejected for him in the summer - but Newcastle aren't alone in wanting to sign him.

Reports in Italy suggest that AC Milan are now interested in a deal for Mitrovic, but have balked at Anderlecht's £12m asking price for their star striker.

If they can agree a fee, a move to the San Siro may be more appealing for Mitrovic, whilst £12m is a huge amount of money for Newcastle to pay - particularly after spending £6m on goalless striker Emmanuel Riviere this summer.

There's still hope for Newcastle given AC Milan's decline in recent years, but if Mitrovic continues to score goals in the Champions League, he's bound to attract even more admiring glances from around Europe.
