United’s midfield injury crisis means Darren Fletcher must start against Arsenal

Darren Fletcher must start for Manchester United this weekend.

With Daley Blind becoming the latest Manchester United player to suffer a potentially serious injury, it is time for the club’s vice-captain to step up against Arsenal.

Darren Fletcher has made just five appearances for Louis van Gaal’s side this season and he has only come off the bench twice in their last nine games. But this weekend’s encounter with the Gunners is the perfect time for the Scotland international to show he still has it.

The combative central midfielder has enjoyed some outstanding performances for United down the years against some of the best in the business, and with Blind injured, Michael Carrick a major doubt and Ander Herrera still recovering from a rib injury, van Gaal could well call on his vice-captain.

Still only 30 there is no reason why Fletcher cannot start against Arsenal and put in a performance that helps his side to a much-needed victory.

Likely to play alongside Marouane Fellaini and either Herrera or Juan Mata, Fletcher could use his considerable experience to great effect and Arsenal’s midfielders will not relish coming up against the United man.

Hot off the back of Scotland’s encounter with England this week, Fletcher could then step straight into action for a club he has served with aplomb.

Having been given a vital role at United this season it is time he proves he can still do a job for them.

He has shone against Arsenal before and this weekend do not be surprised if he does so again.
