Reid v Rojo: How United's reported £5m target compares to Argentine

Manchester United have been linked with West Ham United centre-back Winston Reid, so how does he compare with their recent defensive acquisition?

A report this weekend in the Times claimed Manchester United had received a boost in their alleged pursuit of West Ham United defender Winston Reid, with the New Zealand defender reluctant to sign a new deal at Upton Park.

The 26-year-old's current deal expires in the summer and the report claimed he had been given until the middle of January to sign a new one.  The suggestion was that West Ham would rather sell this season for a reported £5million rather than lose him for nothing just a few months later.

Louis van Gaal's side are certainly in need of a new centre-back and Reid has the Premier League experience and the ability to slot seamlessly into United's back-line.  but how does he compare with summer signing Marcos Rojo, who was brought in to partly solve that very problem?

As you can see from the Opta stats below, Reid is considerably more dominant in the air, making almost twice as many headed clearances as Rojo and winning more aerial duels per game.

The West Ham man also averages more tackles per match, wins slightly more ground duels and is streets ahead when it comes to effective ground clearances.

Marcos Rojo 86% 0.29 1.14 5.43 2.57 3.29 5.86 3.29 596
Winston Reid 83% 0.82 1 5.36 3.09 1.36 9.45 6.09 924

United's Argentina international does however have the upper-hand when it comes to passing accuracy, duels won (by a nose) and interceptions won.

That said there is absolutely no doubt Reid would bring quality and composure to a defence in desperate need of both. Rojo is settling in relatively well at Old Trafford but Reid is far more akin to the defenders United once had in abundance but have allowed to leave without signing appropriate replacements.
