Aiden McGeady could be 'indispensable' for Everton - Martinez

Aiden McGeady

Martinez seems to rate McGeady highly after signing him from Spartak Moscow last January.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has said that Aiden McGeady could become indispensible to his team going forward.

McGeady arrived at Goodison Park from Spartak Moscow in January, and Martinez believes the 28-year-old can become an essential part of the team going forward.

Martinez is quoted in the Liverpool Echo, saying: “I’m very excited to see Aiden grow with us because he’s a phenomenal footballer, and when I say phenomenal I mean that his trickery, ball control and technical ability is something only an elite group in football have.

“The reality is now we’re seeing the way he can use those gifts to effect games. Now I know he can do it on a more consistent basis.

“I think now we know exactly what his role is and he knows what the team expect from him. His starting positions have been very good and in the last two games for us we’ve seen someone who is clear of what his job is on the pitch.

“Can he become indispensable? 100% yes. We’ve got very specific roles in our side. As a winger, Kevin Mirallas can play that role. But Aiden is unique for us as a right-footed winger. Christian Atsu is left-footed.

“There is always a period of adaptation for a player coming into this league. Aiden has had that. Physically he’s pristine and we’ve seen great moments from him. Now I know he can do it every week.”

McGeady undoubtedly has ability. He has very good technical ability and has shown he can beat the opposing full-back but fans of both Everton, and even the Republic of Ireland, will want more from him on a consistent basis.

Out of his 13 appearances for the club this season, McGeady has scored just the one goal, and provided five assists in all competitions and there is a desire for him to increase his numbers, there.

Kevin Mirallas' return to training this week is likely to provide strong competition for the Northern Ireland international given the pace and dynamism the Beligan can offer the Toffees.

But Martinez seems to be aware of the talent that McGeady possesses, and if he sees the 28-year-old performing to the highest level week in, week out, he could become an integral part of any success that comes the club's way.
