Planetside 2 beta for PS4 is coming later this year

Sony online have 1080p/60fps on the agenda for the PS4 port of the popular sci-fi MMO

PS4 gamers waiting for Planetside 2 to make the jump to console should be able to get involved in the game’s beta test later this year. That’s according to creative director Matt Higby who talking to Eurogamer, confirmed a beta for Planetside 2 on PS4 is due before the year is out, and that more information is due to be forthcoming at Sony’s PlayStation Experience event next month.

Planetside 2 was initially announced to be coming to PS4 back in June 2013 with SOE explaining the long development time is due to the fact that Sony’s online arm are working to bring a ”full-on console experience,” as opposed to a straight port from PC.

“As much as it sounds like we’re blowing smoke, we’re working hard to release a game that feels like a full-on console experience and not just like a port,”Higby said. “So it’s taken us quite a long time to re-jigger our user interface and our controls. There’s a lot that needs to get done.”

Translating the controls to the DualShock 4 appears to be the biggest job for SOE. “That’s been a really large design process, and we’ve done a lot of iteration on it to try and make it right,” Higby told Eurogamer. “But our goal is at the end of the day to have our launch on the PS4 feel like a great PS4 native console game. Not just a PC port. So it’s taking a while.”

Appearance-wise Higby confirmed the PS4 version will be comparable to the game on PC with ultra texture settings, full particle effects, lighting and shadows available on the PC version. He also let on that SOE are working to have the game running at 1080p and 60 frames per second although it was noted that the frame rate might be knocked down to 30fps if that means the game will be more stable.

Either way, Higby is confident the game will have the tools to wow PS4 players.“From a graphical fidelity perspective, I think people will be very impressed with what they see on the PS4, “ he said. “That’s always one of those things people are sceptical about. I see every time we post an article like this I always get called out: ‘haha, it’s bulls**t that he’s saying it’s going to look as good.’ It really does.”
