The agent of Brazilian youngster Douglas Coutinho, Taciano Pimenta, has told reporters that his client would prefer to move to Atletico Madrid to Manchester United.
The 20-year-old striker has been linked with a move to the Red Devils over the past couple of days, and his agent has now confirmed that a meeting with United officials has been proposed.
Coutinho currently plies his trade in his native Brazil for league side Atletico Paranaense, but it has been said they are actively looking to sell their youngster as they face financial difficulties
United currently have a number of strikers on their books in Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Radamel Falcao, Javier Hernandez and James Wilson, although there remains a number of question marks.
Rooney, Van Persie and loanee Falcao are no longer considered youthful strikers, Hernandez could see his loan move at Real Madrid become permanent while Wilson remains a raw talent.
Coutinho could be that small, quick striker boss Louis van Gaal craves, but their chances of signing him could be dashed given the player’s reported preference of La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid.
Los Colchoneros have over the past few years had unrivalled success with South American forwards and, according to Pimenta, his client Coutinho sees his development at the Vicente Calderon.
“We talked and it looks good for the player and the club, as the president has already told me he will not object. Manchester United are interested, as are Atletico Madrid, but we will wait to see the proposals, sit down and talk. Coutinho has a preference for Atletico Madrid,” Pimenta is quoted as saying by Mundo Deportivo.
Douglas Coutinho Gomes de Souza was born in Brazil in February 1994. He began his youth career at Cruzeiro in 2008 and later moved to Atletico Paranaense.
He has been capped once for Brazil’s under-23 side and is said to be versatile enough to be able to play on either flank.
