The Ivory Coast have struggled recently, despite perhaps being the most gifted side in Africa. Since exiting the World Cup at the Group Stage in Brazil they have struggled to get into gear. Wins against Sierra Leone and the DR Congo were positives however, they lost to the DRC at home last month, also drawing to Zambia the same week in a friendly. A humiliating 4-1 defeat against Cameroon in September meant they were looking like struggling to qualify for the African Nations Cup next year, which will now be held in Equatorial Guinea after Morocco pulled out due to worries over the Ebola virus.
Today the Ivory Coast took on Sierra Leone, in a game moved to the Ivory Coast because of Ebola worries.
Of course the Ivory Coast have a team full of stars. Liverpool defender Kolo Toure, Manchester City star Yaya Toure, Swansea City striker Wilfried Bony to name just a few.
They also have a former Arsenal flop who has gone on to be a star since his departure from the club. He left Arsenal for Roma last summer and has gone on to be a hit in Italy under his former Lille boss Rudi Garcia.
Today he showed both what Arsenal are missing and also exactly what they are not.
He scored in the nerve-easing 5-1 win today. Goals from himself, Kolo Toure, former Chelsea stopper Salomon Kalou scoring a brace and former Leeds star Max Gradel sealed victory - despite a goal from Mustapha Bangoura.
However, Gervinho actually had a chance to make it six late on.
But this is the Gervinho Arsenal fans will remember...
