Damien Comolli held the director of football role at both Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool in his career. Today, during an interview with Football Today, he has been revealing some of the ins and outs of such a job - in a week where Franco Baldini, current director at Tottenham, has been criticised for the players brought in to White Hart Lane.
Interestingly he mentioned the topic of two former Southampton players he tried to sign during his time at the club.
He stated that while director at Liverpool, he tried in vein to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from the South Coast. The talented attacker was wanted by Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish when he was working as manager of the Anfield club. Unfortunately they were pipped to the post by Arsenal.
Arsenal again pulled the wool over the eyes of Commoli on the deal for Theo Walcott. The England international is now a major nemesis of Tottenham fans, especially after his 2-0 gesture when being carried off the pitch stricken with a knee problem in January. That North London derby ensured he would always be disliked by Tottenham fans.
But Commoli confirmed he tried to sign the player, but instead got Gareth Bale - not a bad replacement.
So Arsene Wenger managed to take Liverpool and Tottenham to the cleaners in the transfer market. Which will undoubtedly surprise some of his more vocal critics.
