Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta has been speaking to the club’s official website about his younger days.
The Spanish international has made the left-back position his own and has so far managed to stay ahead of both Ashley Cole and now summer signing Filipe Luis in the Blues’ pecking-order, but he revealed that he once participated much further up the pitch.
“I was always a striker when I was younger,” Azpilicueta said. “Sometimes I played on the right-wing or at right-back but I was a striker until the age of around 15 or 16.”
The Spaniard arrived at Chelsea as a right-back but in more recent times he has featured predominantly on the opposite flank. And his versatility is such that it is no surprise he once played in a more advanced position.
When asked about his favourite goal as a youngster Azpilicueta replied, “I scored a lot of goals, even though people might not think so.
“I scored a lot of goals from inside the penalty area rather than long distance but I can’t pick one out.”
So it seems that while the likes of Diego Costa and Loic Remy are now relied upon to get Chelsea’s goals, they have another surprise option should it ever get that desperate.
You sense that as with everything Azpilicueta does, he would give it his all…
