Yohan Cabaye's poor performances for club and country have asked questions of his inclusion in the current squad. He needs a good performance.
Former Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye looks set to be given a final chance to prove he is worthy of continuing in Didier Deschamps current France squad.
On Friday evening, Les Bleus takes on Albania at the Stade de la Route de Lorient in Rennes in the first of two friendlies during the international break and French newspaper L’Equipe predict that despite his poor form for Paris Saint-Germain, Cabaye will start the game.
It is a somewhat surprise decision as Deschamps has a number of midfielders that he has called up to the squad that are in better form for their club sides.
Cabaye’s performances for PSG have lacked desire, confidence, and more importantly, quality. It is clear to see that the midfielder can sense this, as too often he seems to be trying too hard to compensate and just looks void of any belief.
Former teammate Moussa Sissoko and the excellent Paul Pogba are set to play alongside Cabaye on Friday, but either Maxime Gonalons, Josuha Guilavogui and especially Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin would have been a better fit.
Deschamps is not going to learn anything more from watching Cabaye’s lacklustre performances, but these two games, the second against Sweden on Monday, would give the coach a chance to hand the reigns to Schneiderlin or see if Gonalons can reproduce his Lyon form for his country.
Cabaye is lucky to even be included in the current squad, and it might take a move in January for the former Lille player to rediscover his form. If Cabaye puts in another poor performance for Deschamps, the France boss may find it very hard to include him in the next international fixtures.
If the PSG man starts against Albania, it is unlikely he will start against Sweden. Cabaye may count himself lucky that he is set to play in what is the weaker of the two fixtures as this will give him the best possible chance to shine.
It would be a surprise though, no matter who he has faced in Ligue 1, the performances just haven’t impressed.
L’Equipe’s Probable XI
Lloris – Jallet, Varane, Yanga-M’Biwa, Digne – Sissoko, Cabaye, Pogba – Valbuena – Lacazette, Benzema
