Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly planning a swoop to land Paul Mitchell, a star scout at south coast club Southampton.
The theory from Daniel Levy seems to be that he already has a good relationship with Mauricio Pochettino and would aid the club in their pursuit of finding the next exciting youngster to tie down at White Hart Lane.
So what sort of qualities and things would he be looking for in a move to Tottenham?
“The success has been built on a structure, which has been in place for a while now (at Southampton,” Mitchell said in an interview with talkSPORT.
“There’s a definite European feel, we have a sporting director and we have people like myself employed at the football club to keep that consistency when the unfortunate happens.”
“You keep that consistency throughout your club, the consistency of the people and the philosophy.”
It’s clear that he has a very simple and clear idea over the circumstances needed at any football club to try and get the best out of his own ability, but the ability of any club as a whole.
His comments about consistency are certainly interesting considering Levy’s recent decisions to change Tottenham’s manager frequently, which means consistency in terms of personnel isn’t always possible.
He also explained the philosophy he’s witnessed during his time with the Saints, which would impact on his role with sides at all levels if he is tempted to Tottenham.
“It’s based on possession and an intensity in and out of possession which runs from the under-8s all the way to the first team.”
“We’ve had a lot of new players come in during the summer and they quickly settle through consistency and hearing the same things consistently.”
If Mitchell is about to head to Tottenham then Mauricio Pochettino can feel that his job is safe because for Spurs to get the most out of Mitchell, consistency and keeping him at the club seems to be paramount.
