PlayStation Vue is initially going to be a console-based service for Sony's PS3, PS4 owners, although they do hint at it arriving on iPad at some point, along with other Sony and non-Sony devices. It'll let people watch live, catch-up, and on-demand TV content without the need for a cable or satellite service.
The past three days of popular programs will be available without the need to schedule recordings, plus unlimited cloud storage allows viewers to save their favourite shows for up to 28 days.
It sounds similar to a Netflix-type subscription service, requesting users to pay a month-to-month subscription fee to access its content. Sony say it'll offer a "fair and competitive price that is transparent with no hidden fees or charges."
An invite only beta for PlayStation Vue will be rolled out this month to select PS3 and PS4 owners, beginning in New York, then Chicago, Philadelphia, and LA. Sony said the beta will include 75 channels per market from networks such as CBS, Fox, and NBC, and Viacom.
Sony are planning a commercial launch of the service during the first quarter 2015. We'll keep an eye out for any news on a UK or European launch.
