On this day: Alexis on 'easy' Arsenal academy life; Phil Jones wants United centre-back role

On the 13th November 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal and Manchester United.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 13th November 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 13th November 2013…

Arsenal life easy

Alexis Sanchez had some interesting words to say about the academy at Arsenal Football Club a year ago today, and they were not exactly flattering.

The Chilean international said:

"I used to wash cars for such little money just so I had enough money to buy my football boots.

"When you are at academies like Manchester United and Arsenal then everything is just given to you.

"The problem for teams like England is that everything is so easy for them. They join these academies at maybe 10 or 11 years old and everything is done for them."

Now Sanchez is at Arsenal, after joining for £35 million in the summer, and hoping to use his influence to get the young players at Arsenal digging their heels in, just like he does on the pitch.

Jones wants defensive role

Phil Jones was expressing his wish on where he would like to play regularly for club and country, at the heart of the defence.

The Manchester United star had often been used in several different positions for both United and England including right-back and holding midfield.

But he said a year ago:

"I'm happy with my own form. I'm pleased to be getting a bit of a run at centre-half.

"It's always nice to play in the position you feel most comfortable in. I played in midfield against Norwich in the Capital One Cup, but mostly it has been centre-back and that's where I want to be.

"When I came, it was always the plan to establish myself as a centre-back and I hope to do it this season. If the manager keeps faith in me, I'll make sure I can cement a spot there and get a good run there."

If he could keep himself fit he might actually get a chance to cement himself in that position.
