Hector Moreno has spoken of his special relationship with Mauricio Pochettino as the 26-year-old Espanyol defender continues to be linked with a move to White Hart Lane.
The Mexican centre-back has been linked with Tottenham, as Pochettino reportedly considers ways to give his defence an injection of quality looking ahead to the winter transfer window, which opens in January.
If reports of the club’s interest in Moreno are accurate, Spurs have everything going in their favour.
“Mauricio believes in me,” he told an Espanyol newspaper.
“They talk about Espanyol (wanting me) but it was Pochettino that worked hard to get me here.”
“It would be beneficiary to both myself & the club if I can fully recover and be on the market in January.”
Pochettino appears to have left a lasting mark on the defender from his time at Espanyol, before he moved into English football with Southampton.
Tottenham aren’t short of central defensive options with Younes Kaboul, Jan Vertonghen and Federico Fazio all high profile players competing for centre back spots.
Eric Dier has also just revealed that he wants to start focusing on playing as a centre back for Spurs, with Kyle Walker’s return to fitness allowing him that option.
For chairman Daniel Levy to commission a deal for Moreno, he’ll more than likely want to see a player leaving the club first to free up wages and create squad space.
That could happen with Vlad Chiriches, who has struggled to impress Pochettino this season, leading to current links of a move to Serie A with Juventus thought to be interested.
Moreno is obviously keen on a move to Tottenham and it’s now down to the club to create the circumstances and financial situation where his arrival at White Hart Lane to play under his old boss becomes a reality.
