Leicester City secured the long-term future of one of manager Nigel Pearson’s favourites on Wednesday, with right-back Ritchie De Laet putting pen to paper on a new deal until 2018.
De Laet, 25, has been an ever-present in the Premier League this season, and has made almost 100 appearances since arriving at the King Power Stadium from Manchester United in the summer of 2012.
Speaking to the club’s official website, the Belgian said: “I’m so happy to sign a new deal here at Leicester. I’m settled, my family has settled and hopefully it’ll be a good thing for the Club and me.
“Leicester took a risk with me at the start when they brought me here without a lot of experience and they stuck with me, so now I’m doing the same thing with them.
|2014-15 Premier League||Goals||Assists||Total Key Passes||Total Passes GAME||Passing Acc||Total Crosses GAME||Cross Acc||Total Tackles GAME||Total Clearance GAME||Interceptions GAME||Appearances||Mins Played|
|Ritchie de Laet||0||1||9||30.18||71%||2.18||17%||3.36||5.36||2.91||11||928|
“It’s been nearly the same group since I’ve been here. Most have signed new contracts to stay with Leicester, so we’re a group that are tied together and we’ll fight together to stay in the Premier League.”
An essential component of the Leicester back-line during last season’s Championship-winning season, De Laet’s performances in the top-tier this term have come in for some criticism from sections of Foxes fans, however, with a mixed reaction greeting news of his new deal.
If Andy King is worth a 4 year contract then Ritchie De Laet defiantly is #lcfc— Dean Gresswell-Smith (@DeanGressSmith) November 13, 2014
The abuse De Laet is getting for signing a new contract is unbelievable. Give the guy a break. #lcfc— Chris Sansome (@lcfcsanny) November 12, 2014
Bloody hell. De Laet hasn't been great this season but he doesn't deserve this abuse. Same goes for Nugent as well. Wind your Necks in #lcfc— Bert (@BertLcfc) November 12, 2014
If De Laet had any shame he'd refuse to sign the contract n claim he's been a "forest fan since i was a boy" an head back to the champ #lcfc— Reece (@reecelcfc) November 12, 2014
I don't mind De Laet, but has to be dropped for Sunderland at home and bring in Danny Simpson #lcfc— Dan Hunt (@HuntDan8) November 12, 2014
The hate for De Laet is stupid! It takes time to get used to the league! He's gone from Andy Reid to Hazard! #lcfc— Jaz. (@JazzP_96) November 12, 2014
I don't think De Laet has had a good start to this season, but he has great potential. #lcfc— Injured Watkins (@SPW_85) November 12, 2014
I personally don't see what all the hate is about for De laet! I think we'd miss his pace if he wasn't in the team. #lcfc— Beef (@beef_perkins) November 12, 2014
Good to see that Ritchie De Laet has signed a new contract,might not have played the best in recent weeks but he'll improve I think! #LCFC— Kieran Farkas (@_Farky_95) November 12, 2014
So glad for Richie de Laet signing a new contract. In my opinion underrated and key, all be it not been best in past few games, #lcfc— Conor O'Grady (@ConorOGrady2000) November 12, 2014
What's going on in Pearson's head, why on earth would you give the worst right back in the Prem a new four year contract?? @de_laet_r— Robbo King (@RobboKing1996) November 12, 2014
Wait... We gave De Laet a four-year deal?! What on earth has everyone been smoking at the KP?— Gray (@MattGray97) November 12, 2014
