The Daily Star claims Tottenham Hotspur technical director Franco Baldini is keen to oversee a deal for Jay Rodriguez, as it could help preserve his position at White Hart Lane.
The Italian is one of the Tottenham Hotspur officials to have come under pressure through the club’s recent run of inconsistency, thought to be responsible for several deals following the exit of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid.
Spurs have been criticised for the way they spent the money generated by selling Bale, but Baldini appears to be keen on making up for any previous questionable deals with a swoop for one of Mauricio Pochettino’s reported key transfer targets.
“Technical director Baldini knows he is under scrutiny with Spurs having made a terrible start to the season,” reports the Star.
“Baldini's position is much more precarious, however, and he hopes that delivering the club's No.1 transfer target (Rodriguez) will help ease some of the pressure.”
“Baldini believes seeing off City and Liverpool and striking a deal with Saints will go some way to silencing concerns inside White Hart Lane about his suitability for the job.”
Baldini faces a race against time if he’s looking to get a deal done for Rodriguez because reports yesterday suggested that the Saints were working on a new contract offer.
Tottenham could use some attacking support in the January transfer window and it will be interesting to see how involved Baldini is in any negotiations for Rodriguez.
Pochettino is arguably in a better position than the Italian to approach his old club over a deal although they may be willing to talk with Baldini, rather than the manager who left them for Tottenham.
Rodriguez can be one of the best English players in the Premier League when he’s fit and firing but it won’t be easy for Spurs to get him snapped up on a £15 million deal considering how stubborn the Saints were over some players last summer.
