Tottenham Hotspur may be closer to the bottom of the Premier League table than to the top, but that does not prevent Federico Fazio from claiming that they can compete for the title.
Yes, the title. The Premier League title. This season.
‘I think at Tottenham we have very good players who can fight for first position in the Premier League and fight for the Champions League and the Europa League’, The Mirror quotes the 27-year-old defender as saying. ‘But we need to improve like a team, to be like a team because I think we have got very good players’.
Fazio’s argument is that they have played only 11 matches, which means that there is plenty of time to catch league leaders Chelsea.
‘No’, he said when asked if he regrets leaving Sevilla for Tottenham in the summer transfer window. ‘There have only been 10 or 11 matches. We need to improve some things but I think we will stay in the top positions of the Premier League’.
Fazio’s comments about Tottenham being good enough to win the Premier League title will be hard to digest, even by the club’s fans.
Although there are some genuinely brilliant and talented players like Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen, Mauricio Pochettino’s side are simply not strong enough to compete with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City.
However, a top-four spot is still within reach of Spurs. At the moment, the North London club are 12th in the Premier League table with 14 points from 11 matches, just four points behind fourth-placed West Ham United.
Tottenham’s league campaign so far has been disappointing, but they are very much in with a chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
Even if Spurs fail to finish in the top four of the Premier League, they can still play Champions League football next season…. if they win the Europa League.
