Former Arsenal striker Carlos Vela was the star of the show as his brace helped Mexico condemn the Netherlands to a 3-2 defeat in front of their own fans.
Vela was in fine form as he pounced for both goals, producing the sort of performance which was missing during his career at the Emirates Stadium.
He moved to Real Sociedad on loan from the Gunners before a permanent switch and will now have the chance to work with former Manchester United manager David Moyes, as Sociedad look to climb into the top half of the La Liga table.
He produced just three goals in 29 appearances for Arsenal after impressing in the club’s youth ranks as he struggled to make the step up to senior football in North London.
He already has two goals and two assists from league performances so far this season, but will be determined to improve on that ratio as Moyes settles into his new role, perhaps more accustomed to his experience than his time at Manchester United.
The Netherlands weren’t able to keep tabs on him as he produced a solid display of attacking football last night with Manchester United owned Javier Hernandez scoring the winning goal.
Vela seems to have developed into a more complete player than the figure at Arsenal.
He’s able to play different roles in Sociedad’s, and Mexico’s attack, which makes him difficult to mark and keeps him effective in important games whether he’s playing on the shoulder of a defence or looking to drop off and pick up possession.
He showed all sides of his game against the Netherlands and was deadly in front of goal as any striker playing at any international level should be.
Here’s what Arsenal fans had to say about his performance for Mexico last night.
