The England Under-21 squad were put through their paces in training by manager Gareth Southgate on Wednesday, as the team gear up for Friday’s friendly against Portugal at Burnley.

The match marks the first since Southgate’s side sealed their place at next summer’s European Under-21 Championships, following a 4-2 aggregate win over Croatia in their qualifying play-off tie last month.

The Young Lions have been dealt a tough hand for the tournament in the Czech Republic, however, with the subsequent draw pitting them in the same group as Italy, Portugal and Sweden.

The team dropped only two points in qualification, though, courtesy of a 1-1 draw in Finland in September last year, winning their remaining nine games, with Saido Berahino scoring 10 times on the way.

The West Bromwich Albion striker has since made the move up to the senior squad, but Southgate hopes him and other key players such as Luke Shaw will be made available next June.

“We'll judge that on a case-by-case basis because you also have to look at individual players and how many matches he's played during the season, how much of an attachment there is to our team,” he told Sky Sports.

"But certainly the guys who have played for us during the qualifying campaign are the ones we are more likely to look at in terms of doing that because they have a connection to the group.”

For now, Southgate will be relying on the likes of Tottenham Hotspur’s in-form front man Harry Kane, Hull City winger Tom Ince, Chelsea youngster Patrick Bamford and Burnley’s Danny Ings to provide the goals, with all four featuring in the gallery below.
