On this day: Chelsea still paying Di Matteo; United linked with Di Maria and Khedira

On the 12th November 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea,

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 12th November 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 12th November 2013…

Roberto Di Ma-Pay-o

It was revealed on this day last year that Chelsea were still paying Roberto Di Matteo around £130k-a-week in salary, despite him being sacked a year previously.

It came after he and Roman Abramovich failed to reach an agreement after his sacking as Chelsea boss, during which time he brought them Champions League success during his brief stint in charge.

So the club continued to pay him up until he took the Schalke 04 job last month!

Lord Should Go

A year ago today and an international coach was telling an Arsenal striker he must leave and most Arsenal fans agreed. Because the striker in question was Nicklas Bendtner.

The out of touch striker had become a bit-part player at Arsenal after several off the pitch incidents had him in hot water with his boss Arsene Wenger.

And Morten Olsen was insisting he considered his future in North London:

"Bendtner scored two great goals for us in the game against Italy, but there were also things he lacked in the match and this only comes through playing games.

"It is for this reason that he should find something new this winter. I think he will make the recommendation to himself and that is the main thing. Footballers want to play football.

"He needs to play. He has maybe 10 years left to go; he must use them well."

In the end a drunk and naked taxi incident in his native Copenhagen saw him banished from the club and he joined VfL Wolfsburg in the summer on a free transfer.

No Arsenal fan grieved the loss of Lord Bendtner.

Real double swoop

A year ago and it was being reported that Manchester United wanted both Angel Di Maria and Sami Khedira of Real Madrid in a reported £53 million double swoop.

Well one of those proved to be true, but for far more than the cost being highlighted a year ago.

Di Maria joined United for a fee in the region of £59.7 million. Khedira on the other hand is winding down his contract with Madrid in order to make a free transfer exit in the summer.
