Marc Wilmots criticises van Gaal over Januzaj use

The Belgium manager is frustrated with his club counterpart over how Januzaj is deployed for Manchester United

Belgium manager Marc Wilmots has criticised Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal over how the sixty-three-year-old Dutchman utilises teen star Adnan Januzaj.

Speaking ahead of Belgium's upcoming games against Iceland and Wales, Wilmots bemoaned the fact that van Gaal insists on playing the 19-year-old winger strictly in wide positions.

Believing that the youngster has the ability to influence play and score goals by cutting to the inside, Wilmots is frustrated that Januzaj isn't being given the opportunity to play the role at club level.

“I saw the two games he played with Antonio Valencia behind him," Wilmots told Manchester Evening News.

"van Gaal asked him to stand close to the sidelines, I ask exactly the opposite, that he comes inside."

“I want him to come on to his left foot from the right to give that ball or shoot at goal," added the 45-year-old Belgium manager.

With Januzaj having a subdued campaign so far this year after exploding into the first team under old boss David Moyes last season, Wilmots could well have a point.

Moments of brilliance such as his brace against Sunderland last year are not appearing so far under van Gaal, so perhaps it is time he lets his prodigy roam more freely.
