'Wenger has ignored Steve Bould's advice on signings', claims ex-Arsenal star

Arsenal legend Ian Wright claims Arsene Wenger's number two is not having his voice heard.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has commented on the role of his former teammate Steve Bould, who is the club's assistant manager.

A lot has been made of the defensive contribution the former Gunner could make to the team when he was appointed in 2012, an early on it looked positive.

Yet the impact appears to have been negligible, with Arsenal's defence looking woeful during the early part of the 2014/15 season.

Former striker Ian Wright was asked why Bould's effect was not being seen on the pitch during his BBC Radio 5 Live phone in on Sunday, and defended the 51-year-old.

He claimed Bould's job was made more difficult because manager Arsene Wenger had not acted upon his advice to sign players.

Wright told 606: "What is worrying is that Steve Bould is there (and these mistakes are happening).

"I know there are players Steve Bould has recommended to Arsenal that they've not taken. That needs to change."

Wright did not go onto detail which players Bould had cited as good potential signings, but the the claims he is not on the same page with Arsene Wenger are not ideal to hear.

The Frenchman admitted last month he made a mistake in failing to sign a defender to replace Thomas Vermaelen, leaving the Gunners short at the back, and lacking a top defensive midfielder to shield their problems too.

In Bould's defence, Arsenal's first choice pairing of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker have previously looked solid, and even the best coaching in the world will not turn Nacho Monreal into a top level centre-back, that much is apparent.

When Mathieu Debuchy returns too from injury alongside Koscielny, the Gunners' defence will be much improved.

Unfortunately for Steve Bould, he is being judged on the players he has available to him at present, and not those who are injured, nor the ones who he reportedly tried to convince Arsene Wenger to buy.
