Chelsea star Nemanja Matic told his teammates that they needed beat rivals Liverpool if they want to become champions ahead of their 2-1 victory at Anfield.
The Serbian international has been an influential figure for the Blues since re-joining the club last summer and has this season struck up an effective midfield partnership with Cesc Fabregas.
The midfield duo have started every game for Jose Mourinho’s side this season and they once again played a key role in another impressive win.
Matic in particular had a big impact on the outcome, picking up the Man of the Match award but also for something he said in the dressing room pre-match.
“He just said if we want to be champions then we needed to win the game,” Azpilicueta told Chelsea.com.
“It’s our target to be champions and when you go to the stadiums where it’s really hard you have to do a very good job.”
The victory over the Reds extends the West Londoners unbeaten run at the start of the season to a club record 17 games in all competitions.
In the Premier League, Manchester City’s 2-2 draw at Queens Park Rangers sees them slip eight points behind the Blues in the race for the title.
