Spurs ace Jan Vertonghen's Chelsea comments look embarrassing now

Tottenham Hotspur's Jan Vertonghen may regret talking his side up.

Tottenham's poor start to the season is emphasised by the high expectations the club has, especially the players.

With the side currently struggling for form, now is not the time to be making boasts the side can't match.

In an interview published by FourFourTwo on Friday, the 27-year-old made the claim that only Chelsea were the team he could rule out finishing above Spurs.

He said: "United, Liverpool, Everton, we are all close. Only Chelsea are probably too strong for us. There’s still a lot to play for and anything is possible for fourth place."

Now in fairness to the Belgian, his comments are in part as much as being unable to identify the sides who will rise up, who all face their own troubles.

Yet when he makes a claim as such, and then his own Tottenham team go and lose 2-1 at home to Stoke City, it all looks a little embarrassing for Vertonghen.

Spurs now sit in 12th position, below their weekend opponents Stoke, and have won four games of a possible 11 in the Premier League.

A little self-confidence is fine, and there's no reason Spurs should have an inferiority complex to sides around them, but it's another thing to talk up his side's prospects in the midst of a woeful run of form, and then see it plumb new depths.

The sides mentioned by Vertonghen appear to have a clearer direction than Spurs at present, and are all good bets to finish ahead of them. He also fails to mention rivals Arsenal and reigning champions Manchester City.

It's not just about being able to match these sides on their day, which Spurs do very rarely, but more about putting together a consistent run of league wins.

Spurs have not won two consecutive Premier League matches since August, and have only won two of nine since then.

Tottenham are not just miles behind Chelsea's level, they are a long way off being even close, and Vertonghen would be better off taking one game at a time before looking too far in front.
