West Ham United's youngsters were left star struck after they got the chance to face a Messi-led Argentina side in a training match on Tuesday.
With Argentina gearing up for Wednesday’s international friendly against Croatia at Upton Park, the likes of Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero were put through their paces on Tuesday evening by West Ham United’s under-21s in a training ground match.
Carlos Tevez, a West Ham cult hero following his season-long spell in 2006-07, also played in the behind-closed doors clash, alongside Messi, Aguero, former Hammer Javier Mascherano and Manchester United record-signing Angel Di Maria.
Around 17,000 supporters are expected to attend the match at the Boleyn Ground, with Argentina manger Gerardo Martino admitting that he is not short on attacking talent to give them their money’s worth.
“We have so many possibilities up front. Kun Aguero is one of the top scorers in England, Tevez is doing well in Italy and, of course. [Lionel] Messi,” he said at his press conference.
“It's going to be hard to see them all in the starting line-up at the same time all the time. It would be unfair on the other players who are not No 9s and who we want to see.
“We have decided that Messi will play on the right because if he played like he does for his club, we would have a fourth No 9.
“Obviously I have a system and like to stick to it. But this is a good opportunity to try as many of these top players up front as possible.”
With West Ham’s youngsters getting the chance to face the star-studded line-up first, however, many of them took to Twitter to express their disbelief at sharing a pitch with Messi and co., while also showing off the inevitable selfies.
