Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has warned Manchester United that Angel Di Maria can lose control.
Di Maria has made a fantastic start to life in the Premier League with United, scoring three goals and producing five assists following his £60 million move from the Bernabeu in the summer.
However, the Italian has implied that the Argentine star can be inconsistent.
“People should think twice before saying that James can fill Di María's boots, because they're very different players,” Ancelotti told Marca.
“Di María could take matches by storm with his energy, but he also used to lose control sometimes, misplacing important passes.”
There were some glimpses of what Ancelotti is getting at which can be found from the World Cup, especially when Di Maria tried a Rabona style pass as a cross which went horribly wrong against Switzerland.
He also gave possession away on 51 occasions during that game.
Where United are currently benefiting from having him is the simple fact that most Premier League defenders have never come up against him before.
The challenge for Di Maria will be guarding against complacency and reinventing himself once sides work out tactics and systems, which are better designed to keep him out of games.
A good example can be seen from how Jose Mourinho setup Chelsea in the 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford, which was one of Di Maria’s more quiet games this season.
He’s a world class player but he’s not going to be effective every single time for United, which is something Louis van Gaal’s team need to be prepared for.
