Arsenal linked with Tottenham's Chiriches - Three questions and reaction

Vlad Chiriches

Arsenal have been linked with an unlikely move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Vlad Chiriches.

Arsenal have been linked with a move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Vlad Chiriches as Arsene Wenger mulls over ways to improve the back four of his team ahead of the second half of the season.

Arsenal’s defensive problems have been exposed in the club’s last two games, with the Gunners throwing away a 3-0 lead in the Champions League against Anderlecht before they were beaten in the Premier League by Swansea City last weekend.

Reports this morning suggest Wenger has a winter budget of around £20 million to spend and we’ve looked at three key questions generated by the rumour as well as some reaction from Arsenal fans.

Is he good enough?

Arsenal fans would point out that a centre back who can’t get into Tottenham’s team shouldn’t be a good option for Arsenal’s team.

On the one hand, that’s a valid point but on the other, it’s unlikely Chiriches would be first choice at Arsenal but more of a backup, squad option.

Would Tottenham do business with Arsenal?

Spurs showed with the Gareth Bale to Real Madrid saga, when they had a bigger offer from Manchester United, that they won’t sell to sides just because the money is right if they consider them a rival which would be the case here.

Spurs could do a deal but their chairman Daniel Levy would get every ounce of possible value out of the deal that he could because it would be Arsenal that Spurs were selling to.

How much would he cost?

More than likely over the £10 million mark, again predominantly because of Levy’s tendency to get profit out of deals when selling players on from Tottenham.

That would represent at least half of Wenger’s winter budget, meaning he could struggle to improve other areas of the squad, if he wants to bring in more than one player.

Here is some reaction from Arsenal and Tottenham fans.
