Head To Head Shaw Vs Clichy II

Manchester-based duo Luke Shaw and Gael Clichy were both in action on Saturday – but which player comes out on top as the best Manchester-based left-back of the weekend?

According to the table provided by Opta, both players performed notably in certain categories and played a part in their teams’ respective results.

The Red Devils hosted Crystal Palace and overcame the visitors 1-0 after lengthy spells on the front foot trying to wear their opponents down.

England international Shaw provided an attacking outlet down United’s left flank and contributed well in possession, making 43 accurate passes in comparison to Clichy’s 29.

As an attacking force, however, Manchester City’s French international was the more forceful and creative – completing one key pass to Shaw’s zero and playing more forward passes.

From a defensive perspective, the Citizens were shaky all afternoon and their 2-2 draw with Queens Park Rangers could have been much worse.

Clichy competed three tackles, four effective clearances, one interception and three ball recoveries and he was tasked with stopping tricky duo Charlie Austin and Eduardo Vargas from linking up.

Shaw also had his defensive skills put to the test though the youngster was much more decisive, racking up six ball recoveries and seven effective clearances.

His movement and solidarity was on full show and former 1970s United left-back Arthur Albiston felt his performance will enhance his chances of a regular spot at both club level and on the international stage.

"You can almost forget about him for 10 years, that’s his position, he will be a regular for United and for England.” He said, quoted by the official Manchester United website.

“It all happened for him quite quickly in the summer, with a big move, the World Cup, all the talk about him, but I think the manager was keeping his feet on the ground a little bit. He played really well against Crystal Palace and that’s what you can expect from him in the future.”

Due to Shaw’s more significant work at the back, he comes out on top this weekend as Manchester’s best left-back though Gael Clichy can also be pleased with a solid outing.
