Former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie Redknapp has suggested Arsenal defender Calum Chambers should study video footage of the nightmare he was given by Jefferson Montero yesterday.
The Swansea star gave Chambers one of his most difficult games since he moved to Arsenal, as the Swans won 2-1 to pile the pressure onto Arsene Wenger’s side.
Chambers has been impressive since his £16 million summer move from Southampton, but he needs to improve as world class wingers are now likely to target him as a weakness in the Arsenal defence.
“He was strong, quick and went past Calum Chambers at will. It’s not a game the young defender will want to watch back, but he should do so he can learn from the experience because Montero was magnificent,” wrote Redknapp for the Daily Mail.
Chambers is still only 19-years-old and is far from the finished article and Redknapp is spot on that one of the only ways for him to improve is to study his performances when he’s been caught out.
That allows him to look at where he can improve and protect himself when he’s challenged against a similar player to Montero further into the season and for the rest of his career.
It’s also important to remember that Chambers has been used in different roles by Arsene Wenger already this season, which makes it difficult for him to settle in one place and have a faster and more solid impact in that one slot.
The test now for Chambers is to make sure that his negative performance yesterday doesn’t happen again and that in turn will help Arsenal to keep a higher volume of clean sheets.
