Arsenal's Theo Walcott comments on Chelsea interest

Arsenal winger Theo Walcott has told how he spurned advances from Chelsea to originally Southampton, choosing the Gunners instead.

Arsenal winger Theo Walcott has revealed Chelsea tried to sign him as a youngster.

The England international has also told the reason why he snubbed the choice to the Blues and head to Southampton instead, stating he found the club too big.

He told The Sun: "It was the family nature of Saints that made me turn down Chelsea as a kid. Stamford Bridge was daunting."

Choosing Southampton ahead of the Blues led to him being handed his debut for the club at only 16-years-old, far ahead of schedule.

The winger earned a transfer to Arsenal, and was even called up to the England squad before he had started a game for the club.

Clearly his decision was a shrewd one, electing to start out at a club where the glass ceiling to break through was lower, and not unattainable.

Chelsea were in full swing of the early Roman Abramovich era in 2005, and there was not a single young player who brke through into the first team to become a regular.

Walcott could have been the exception, but the odds were against him, and it's likely the Arsenal star would not change a thing.
