Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Glenn Hoddle has been highlighted an area that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger needs to address soon.
And, no surprise, that is the Gunners’ defence.
‘Arsenal’s defending continues to baffle me’, the Queens Park Rangers coach wrote in The Daily Mail. ‘The capitulation in the Anderlecht game from 3-0 to 3-3 was another example of a problem that has been troubling them for a few years…
‘The reason their deficiency in this area confuses me is that the Arsene Wenger I played under at Monaco would certainly have addressed this aspect of the game. And I can’t believe he has not tried to do so at Arsenal…
‘What I’m talking about here is not a wholesale change of philosophy in Arsene’s game plan. He has always been an attacking coach and there’s nothing wrong with that. What I’m talking about is being able to shut down a game for 15 minutes. All the top sides can do that’.
Hoddle may be a Tottenham legend, but his words will resonate with many Arsenal fans. During the summer transfer window, there were calls for Wenger to sign a world-class defensive midfielder and a suitable replacement for the departed Thomas Vermaelen, but the Frenchman did not do so.
And now Arsenal are paying the price.
