Sunderland and Everton played out a 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light on Sunday afternoon.
Sebastian Larsson curled in a fine free-kick to put the Black Cats ahead in the 67th minute after Leighton Baines had fouled Will Buckley. But the England international left-back atoned for his earlier mistake by scoring from the spot after Connor Wickham had fouled Seamus Coleman in the area.
The result means Everton remained 10th in the table while Sunderland climbed up to 14th.
Toffees midfielder Gareth Barry was stretchered off with a suspected broken leg although Everton have since confirmed on their official Twitter feed that is not the case, although there is damage to the midfielder's ankle that must be assessed.
