But the victory was not all it seemed.
Although Louis van Gaal's side secured a much-needed clean sheet, their performance going forward was lacklustre at best.
And it was not until Mata came on that United posed any sort of threat in front of goal.
Three points are three points, though, and De Gea celebrated by posting a picture on Twitter of him with the match-winner. For the goalkeeper personally, Saturday marked his 50th clean sheet for United.
Mata tweeted himself, too, the 26-year-old thanking fans after coming on and changing the game with his creativity and, of course, the winning goal.
The man of the match, though, as voted by supporters and pundits alike, was left-back Luke Shaw, who was as good going forward as he was at the back.
The 19-year-old acknowledged the importance of Manchester Unitd's clean sheet and also thanked the Old Trafford faithful.
The results keep coming for Van Gaal's side, then, but all those affiliated with the club will no doubt want better performances after the international break. A trip to Arsenal is first on the agenda.
