United supporters are not best pleased with the duo's current form.
Manchester United's 1-0 win over Crystal Palace brought two positives: a clean sheet and three points.
Beyond that, however, it was a struggle for United supporters to find much to cheer about. The defence impressed - but against a side that was poor going forward.
“In the first half, we gave only one chance away and it was a miscommunication between McNair and Blind,” Van Gaal told MUTV after the narrow victory. “But, in the second half, we scored and that is the most important thing.
“After that, we tried to kill the game, we had to kill the game for the first time. So I am very happy. In spite of the fact we killed the game, we created a lot of chances. Rooney could have scored, Mata could have scored for the second time and van Persie also.
"We did it well because three points was very important. Now we have an international break after a victory, which is always better.”
The Man United boss's comments were hardly full of joy and rightly so. Several performers let him down at Old Trafford, with two in particular frustrating fans.
Januzaj and van persie need to be dropped if we are gonna move forward #MUFC— Joe Fisher (@JoeFisher10) November 8, 2014
Poor performance, tempo was too slow. What has happened Januzaj and Van Persie? Time for Mata and Falcao or Wilson. #mufc— James Geary (@JamesGeary3) November 8, 2014
I felt the following were largely anonymous today: Rooney, van Persie, Januzaj, di Maria. #mufc— Apple & MUFCfixtures (@UnitedByApple) November 8, 2014
Thought Shaw and Carrick were our best players. I'd drop Van Persie and play Rooney right up top with Mata behind him. Januzaj poor. #MUFC— Jordan Lee Gallagher (@j_gall91) November 8, 2014
Absolutely terrible performance from Van Persie. Januzaj was really poor as well. Di Maria has disappeared recently as well. #MUFC— Billy Joseph Rock (@BillyJosephRock) November 8, 2014
Disapprove of how Rooney is being utilised. Van Persie should be on the bench. And never Januzaj over Mata. What is Van Gaal doing. #MUFC— UncleDaisy (@hahahaplisno) November 8, 2014
