Man City fans were less than impressed with their summer signing's display against Queens Park Rangers.
No longer do top-class signings become a priority as it is assumed City's current squad is good enough. It happened with Roberto Mancini. And it's happening now. The end result is a batch of cover signings that never end up the requisite level.
"I'm not thinking about Chelsea," Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini told BBC Sport after the 2-2 draw at QPR.
"I'm thinking about my team. We have 27 games more and the championship is very long. They [Chelsea] are in a very good moment but we will see if they will continue it all year or if they will drop points.
"The way the game was during the 90 minutes, we deserved at least a draw. We had more chances to score. Of course I wanted the three points but if you can't win it, it's better not to lose."
But even the Chilean does not sound convinced. Serious questions, of course, must be asked of his management. There is no doubt, though, that the players aren't stepping up to the plate at the moment either.
On Twitter after the QPR draw, City fans made themselves heard on the subject of Fernando...
Clichy, Fernando and sagna were sub standard today, none of them would even have made the QPR first 11. #mcfc— Steve Alcock (@Savechip55) November 8, 2014
Hart and Aguero are carrying this team. Fernando, Fernandinho, Navas and Clichy are shocking. Wouldn't put them in our EDS #mcfc— dom// (@wtfdom) November 8, 2014
How the he'll did we score over 150 goals with that team? Toure not good enough today, Fernando not really an upgrade from Barry #MCFC— Joseph Winterbottom (@JRHWinterbottom) November 8, 2014
Am I the only one wondering if fernando is a problem? He's making some rather dubious challenges and his pass choice/range is limited. #mcfc— The Shaman (@Sil3ntdr3am) November 8, 2014
Sagnay Mangala clichy Toure and both Fernando's wouldn't get a score of 10 between them. #mcfc— Craig Cassells (@cassells_craig) November 8, 2014
