Arsenal striker Benik Afobe has been challenged to beat the record Chelsea's Patrick Bamford set at MK Dons last season.
The Milton Keynes-based side came out on top in a seven goal thriller at Port Vale yesterday, with Afobe (currently on loan at stadium:mk) grabbing a brace to help them on their way.
Port Vale opened the scoring in the sixth minute through Ben Williamson, before the Arsenal youngster got himself on the scoresheet for the first time. Carl Baker then put MK Dons in the lead for the first time on 40-minutes but former Millwall attacker Dany N'Guessan was able to equalise just before the break.
Afobe, from the penalty spot, put Dons back ahead just before the hour mark and Danny Green extended their lead going into the last 10 minutes of the match. N'Guessan got himself on the scoresheet for a second time for Vale but it was too little too late as the ref called time with the away side 4-3 to the good.
MK Dons manager Karl Robinson commented on the comparisons between Afobe and Bamford after the match by stating: “I set him [Benik Afobe] Patrick’s [Bamford] target by Christmas.
''He got 17 goals and, if Benik gets that, then the stats will speak for themselves. His all-round play was very good.”
On 15 goals for the season already, it is hard to see Afobe not surpassing Patrick Bamford's tally, let alone reaching it.
However, the key for Afobe, who has previously enjoyed loan spells at Championship level before, is making an impact on the division much like the young Chelsea striker has in both this and last season.
Bamford made a huge impression at Derby, where his goals helped them reach the play-off final, and is enjoying similar success again this campaign at Middlesbrough. Whereas Afobe, prior to his loan move to MK Dons, had a record of four Championship goals in 40 appearances.
Afobe, if he breaks Bamford's record, should look at what the Chelsea man has achieved at a higher level as inspiration and hope to follow on in similar footsteps.
