Manchester United winger Nani will not be returning to Old Trafford before the end of the season according to the latest reports.
The Portuguese international has been in fine form for loan club Sporting Lisbon, scoring five goals in 12 appearances to date. But newspaper O Jogo claims that official sources of the Primeira Liga club have confirmed the deal will run until the end of the current campaign, rather than January as has been suggested by the British press.
There is no doubt Nani has enjoyed a fine spell since his return to Portugal but in truth he is not the answer to United’s ongoing problems.
Louis van Gaal has more than enough attacking options; it is in defence and central midfield that the club remain weak and an early return for Nani would not solve that.
He may well have played his way back into contention further down the line, but for now it is up to the players currently at Old Trafford to get the club out of their current predicament – not least Angel Di Maria who had two relatively quiet matches against Chelsea and Manchester City – exactly the kind of games van Gaal would have expected him to shine in.
