Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers decided to rest many of his star players in midweek as his side took on Real Madrid in the Champions League, with the focus being on today's game against Chelsea.
However, the squad rotation didn't work as the Blues ran out 2-1 winners at Anfield. Emre Can did give Liverpool a first half lead with a deflected effort from long range, but goals from Gary Cahill and Diego Costa handed Jose Mourinho's side the win.
It's yet another disappointment for Liverpool, who are enduring a tough season after last term's second place finish. The departure of top scorer Luis Suarez is clearly an issue, but the Reds continue to look chaotic in defence - despite a number of additions over the last 18 months.
The likes of Mamadou Sakho, Javier Manquillo and Alberto Moreno have had very little impact this season, but the performances of Dejan Lovren are the biggest concern for Rodgers.
The Croatian joined from Southampton in the summer for £20m having impressed in his only season with the Saints, but it hasn't gone to plan for him on Merseyside.
Today's performance once again exploited Lovren's deficiencies, with his positioning from Chelsea's first goal symptomatic of his season so far.
Liverpool fans were fuming with Lovren's display, and took to Twitter to voice their displeasure...
Lovren was absolutely awful again today. Should only play again before Christmas #lfc— LFC (@mainstandred) November 8, 2014
If Rodgers continues to play Lovren after today's game then his managerial ability has to be questioned #LFC— This Charming Man (@AKA_Russell) November 8, 2014
Lovren put in a typically weak display. Couldn't win tackles/headers and couldn't put a proper pass or touch together. #LFC— Bernard (@btkchan) November 8, 2014
Lovren is terrible will be amazed if he has a long stay write that 20mill off. #lfc— Raj Phagura (@Raj_Phagura) November 8, 2014
Can the Southampton version of Lovren please stand up... #YNWA— Andy Gibson (@GibboLFC1892) November 8, 2014
