Gold confirms West Ham's Andy Carroll could make first appearance of the season today

David Gold has some interesting news for West Ham United fans.

West Ham United's joint-chairman David Gold has revealed on Twitter that Hammers forward Andy Carroll is fit for this afternoon's Premier League match against Aston Villa.

The striker is yet to make a competitive appearance this season but came through a practice match against Southend United last week with no ill-effects. As a result, the former Newcastle United player could feature against Paul Lambert's side this weekend.

Gold revealed the news on Twitter when he was asked if Carroll was fit for today's game.

'Yes,' the West Ham supremo wrote.  'It's good to see him back in contention.'

West Ham are currently fifth in the Premier League table, just five points behind second-placed Southampton with 10 games played.

The Hammers have done fine without Carroll, with summer signings Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho excelling in his absence.  But he will add another dimension and, if he can remain fit, he could play a vital role in his club's hugely promising campaign.
