For those reasons, Merson can't see past a West Ham win this weekend, especially as Aston Villa are without lead striker Christian Benteke (suspended) once again.
"I don’t know where Villa are going to go without Christian Benteke," Merson wrote in his weekly Sky Sports predictions column.
"Things were better against Tottenham but their confidence will be low and I can’t see a worse place to go at the moment. West Ham are scoring goals and have pace. They are my banker of the weekend.
The former Premier League midfielder is predicting a 2-0 win for Sam Allardyce's men, which would move them level on goal difference with Arsenal, who travel to Swansea City on Sunday.
