Gary Neville: Carrick should play in midfield, Blind in defence

The former Manchester United right-back believes Michael Carrick is not the right defensive solution for Louis van Gaal.

Gary Neville thinks he has the solution to Louis van Gaal's defensive problems.

The Manchester United boss is without a long list of injured defenders, while Chris Smalling is also suspended.

Many believe the answer is for the Dutchman to deploy Michael Carrick as a ball-playing centre-back, much like the role Javi Martinez used to perform at Athletic Bilbao.

But Neville feels Carrick should stay in defensive midfield.

For the former United defender and current Sky Sports pundit, there exists a better option to cover in defence: Daley Blind.

The Dutchman played as a left wing-back for Van Gaal during the World Cup, when the 63-year-old was manager of the Netherlands team, while Blind's overall versatility could make him a useful option for the Man United boss.

United host Crystal Palace at Old Trafford later today having not won for over a month.

Since beating Everton, Manchester United have drawn with West Brom, drawn with Premier League leaders Chelsea and lost to fierce rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
