Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has backed Chelsea to defeat Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday.
Brendan Rodgers’s Liverpool will host Jose Mourinho’s side at Anfield looking to return to winning ways following a 1-0 defeat to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu in the Champions League in midweek.
The Reds boss was criticised for his decision to field a much weakened team against the defending European champions and is under pressure to win against Chelsea.
Merson, who is critical of Rodgers’s team selection against Madrid, believes that Liverpool are no match for the league leaders.
‘Liverpool need a result but they won’t get one’, the 46-year-old wrote on Skysports.com. ‘You can’t turn it on and off like a tap and I think there is severe pressure on Brendan Rodgers, not just because of the results but also his comments…
‘Liverpool fans don’t have the right to pick the team but they pay their money to travel and have the right to see a team that can win. They saw a 1-0 doing. I think Chelsea will be too good for them this weekend as well’.
Chelsea are currently at the top of the Premier League table with 26 points from 10 matches, while Liverpool are 12 points behind in seventh.
The London outfit will be favourites against Liverpool, but the Merseyside outfit could well spring a surprise.
