Arsenal 'considering January bid' for top Premier League midfielder - report

Arsene Wenger Big Coat

According to reports, Arsenal have their eye on Morgan Schneiderlin.

When Arsenal rebounded from a 2-2 draw with Hull to beat Anderlecht, Sunderland and Burnley, we all seemed to believe that the Gunners had turned their season around.

Yet when faced with Anderlecht again on Tuesday, Arsenal inexplicably threw away a 3-0 lead to only draw against the Belgians, with Aleksandar Mitrovic's injury time equaliser causing more concern over Arsene Wenger's men.

Fans are worried about the state of the Arsenal defence, but one of the main reasons for their shaky displays is because of the lack of protection they are offered.

Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini continue to struggle this season, often looking too slow to track runners and offering very little going forward.

That means a number of players have been linked with January moves to the Emirates Stadium, including Sporting Lisbon star William Carvalho.

Yet according to the Daily Mirror, Arsenal have their eye on a player much closer to home - Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.

The 24-year-old French international joined the Saints from Strasbourg in 2008, and has now made almost 250 appearances on the South Coast, becoming a fans favourite in the process.

His performances this season have been exceptional, and despite angling for a move away from the club in the summer, he has remained a key part of Ronald Koeman's side, who have made a blistering start to the Premier League season.

With great passing ability, strength to win the ball back and energy to get forward and support the attack, Schneiderlin is everything Arsenal need - and their fans should be delighted to read that Arsenal are allegedly interested.

Southampton don't need to sell him though, and are in a strong position to command a fee in excess of £20m for his services - but he'd be worth every penny to Arsenal, who are crying out for someone like Schneiderlin.
