Arsenal legend Martin Keown has his say on the midfielders at the club at the moment.
Arsenal have one of the best midfields in the Premier League, but club legend Martin Keown has pointed out a problem that often goes unnoticed.
‘Injuries have not helped and in some areas there have not been enough personnel to cover it’, the former England international wrote in The Daily Mail.
‘There are options in midfield but sometimes they are not quite getting the balance of numbers right. They have so many midfielders who want to play in similar positions in that area.
‘Players have to know when to attack and when to defend and there has always been great emphasis on attack at Arsenal.
‘You don’t want to take any of those instincts away but some of the defending this season has been shaky at best’.
Keown makes a good point. The likes of Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere and Tomas Rosicky are truly brilliant players, but they are similar in their approach and playing style. Even Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain said not so long ago that he would love to play in central midfield.
Earlier this season, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitted that a number of his players want to play in the number 10 role - and that shows the attacking mindset of the midfielders.
Another problem with Arsenal’s midfield is that the players are largely of the same level. Mesut Ozil is arguably the most talented attacking midfielder in the team, but he is injured at the moment.
The arrival of Alexis Sanchez has enhanced Arsenal’s quality in attack, but it was revealed in the collapse against Anderlecht in the Champions League in midweek that the Chile international forward cannot do it all on his own.
What Arsenal need is balance in midfield. Perhaps the addition of a world-class defensive midfielder will give the team that balance…
