Martin Keown has written off Arsenal’s chances of winning the Champions League this season.
The Arsenal legend gave his verdict on The Daily Mail when asked by a Gunners fan if the North London outfit can finally win the prestigious European competition this campaign.
‘No, not this year I’m afraid’, the 48-year-old replied. ‘Anderlecht are a decent outfit but they won’t strike fear into the bigger teams in Europe so the result this week makes it more difficult for Arsenal.
‘Not only can they not win the group but they have shown a little bit of an achilles heel defensively. Other teams will start to look at that now’.
Arsenal’s defence has been criticised throughout the season, but winning the Champions League is much more than having a strong defence.
The collapse against Anderlecht has been credited to Arsenal’s defensive problems, but the 3-3 draw showed just how far the Gunners are behind some of the biggest teams in Europe.
That Arsenal have a strong attacking line-up cannot be denied, but the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Chelsea have much better players in attack.
One never knows in football, but at this moment in time, one has to back Keown: Arsenal won’t win the Champions League this season.
