Manchester City were beaten 2-1 by CSKA Moscow last night and reduced to nine men in the process.
Manchester City’s chances and hopes of winning the Champions League this season are hanging by a thread.
City were beaten at home by Russia side CSKA Moscow, who prevailed as 2-1 winners at the Etihad last night after City were reduced to nine men during the game.
The result left manager Manuel Pellegrini questioning the confidence in the current side, describing the lack of that quality as a crisis as City now face important matches against AS Roma and Bayern Munich as they try to get into the last 16.
“It is a crisis of confidence and we must find out why by talking to the players every day,” said the boss.
“We must try to find out what happens with this team in the Champions League. These players are important players so I don't understand why they cannot play in the Champions League.”
“You can never imagine you are out when the maths says you are still in. We must try to work hard and get back to our normal style of play.”
One player who has often been the focus point for criticism in Pellegrini’s team is Martin Demichelis, who was one of the only City players to have something close to a decent game last night.
The Argentine did his best to hold the back four together while he provided an obvious and constant threat when he went forward to join in at set pieces.
He looks to be a much more complete and solid defender than the one who first joined the club and was slammed during his first Premier League season, for an apparent lack of understanding over the game and a lack of pace.
However, he’s worked hard to overcome that criticism and to become a key part of the City back four.
Here’s what City fans on Twitter had to say about Demichelis’ performance against CSKA last night.
Demichelis done hook, line and sinker there. City look so susceptible at the back— Jay Jaffa (@jayjaffa) November 5, 2014
Yaya Toure loses his man yet Demichelis takes the blame. Poor Martin— Mohammed Mans (@manstastic) November 5, 2014

That CSKA first goal is just high comedy. Yaya Touré's man gets an unmarked header for no good reason. Demichelis tried to save it...to late— Juan José Vallejo (@juan_jo_sports) November 5, 2014
Imagine thinking Demichelis is good— Declan (@barlow_declan) November 5, 2014
@fonseca135 They weren't never good on paper either. Clinchy, Demichelis, Fernandinho all "key" starters who are awful, all on the left side— Nate. (@Just_Natee) November 5, 2014
@OliverKayTimes It's not so much without the ball as it is when they win it back. Awful decision making by Clichy/Demichelis— Adam Digby (@Adz77) November 5, 2014
