In a potentially suspect PR move, Arsenal lined up defender Nacho Monreal for a Twitter question and answer session on Thursday morning.
It had the potential to be an own goal after the Spaniard's poor display in the Champions League against Anderlecht in midweek, and proved so.
Supporters of Monreal's own club, Arsenal, took to the social networking site to lambast the defender, who has been an unconvincing fit at centre-back when required this season.
Here is a selection of the responses...
#AskMonreal Can you ask for move to Chelsea so that you can help to derail their season as well?— Greg Adams (@Arsenal_Books) November 6, 2014
#AskMonreal I'd rather get Ebola than see you play at center back again— Adam Cockings (@Adam_Arsenal) November 6, 2014
It's likely, as Arsenal's communication department were vetting the Tweets put to him, that they weren't seen by the defender, which is probably just as well.
It should be remembered that it is not Monreal's fault he is being played out of position, but Arsene Wenger's, thanks to his decision not to buy a centre-back in the summer after selling Thomas Vermaelen.
