Highly-rated defender Jordan Houghton has put pen to paper on a new three-year at Chelsea

Jordan Houghton took to Twitter and Instagram to express his delight at signing a new contract at Chelsea, extending his 11-year stay at the club by another three years.

The central defender, who turned 19 today, has been at the club since Under-8s level and has gone on to play at various England youth levels, as well as captaining Chelsea's Under-21 side.

Described as combative, committed and confident with the ball at his feet, Houghton is obviously highly-rated by the hierarchy at Chelsea after being handed a contract extension just over a year from signing his first professional terms.

Last season, despite being hampered with knee injury at the start of the campaign, the Blues youngster became an integral part of the side that went on to win the FA Youth Cup starring from the fifth round onwards.

He shone in a defensive midfield role in both legs of the semi-final and final, even netting a crucial goal at Stamford Bridge against Fulham that helped secure the trophy.

After receiving a call-up for the England U20 side, the short-term plan for the defender will now be to establish himself both nationally and internationally before either heading out on-loan or being promoted to the Blues first-team.

The move to secure the youngster on a longer contract will help ensure his development isn't stunted by uncertainty over his future, as now he can look forward to focusing purely on on-the-field matters.
